In Mourning și-a început călătoria muzicală în Falun, Suedia, în anii 2000 și, de atunci, au adus la lumină o serie de albume bine primite de industria muzicală, de la debutul „Shrouded Divine” (2008) și până la „Garden of Storms” (2019).
Descrisă inițial drept o formație cu influențe goth, căutările muzicale au dus trupa, în timp, către zona melodic și progressive death metal, ajungând să fie adeseori descrisă drept unul dintre numele iconice ale scenei progressive melodic death internaționale sau, după unele opinii, drept succesori ai Opeth.
In Mourning aduc însă o abordare muzicală mai directă, care a avut inițial accente de doom, transformate în timp într-o direcție melodioasă, pusă în valoare de compoziții complexe.
